52 in 52 Portraits in ‘23.
My goal for this personal creative project is to create 52 dramatic portraits of people in their homes.
I have set a growth goal for myself. I want to create 52 portraits in 52 weeks, all set in the subjects home environment or other space the person is familiar with. The goal is to create a powerful set of 5 images in 60 minutes. Dramatic portraits. And then publish a book or magazine with the 52 portraits.
Following are images akin to what I would like to create. I would like fashion to be an element of this project. It is time to line up January's portraits. Male, or female.
A few details. We will start planning your session via a Zoom conference to plan wardrobe, the type of look/wardrobe you are comfortable with and to help me understand what your environment looks like, how big it is, what kind of light, etc. I do ask that female subjects get their hair and makeup done professionally. I can offer recommendations. I plan on 45-60 minutes shooting time with a few minutes to setup and take down equipment. I will bring lights without electric cords. My goal will be to create 5 great images. If I deem one of the images to be contest worthy I may withhold that image until after judges have seen it. Currently I am offering these sessions on a “TFP'“ basis. A model release is required for this project so that I may use the images.
I will also need you to sign a model release. If the person being photographed is a minor, I will need a parent or guardian to sign the release.
If you are interested in being photographed this way, please fill out the form below and I will contact you. If you would like to see a gallery of images from other artists that inspired this project please let me know. Be sure to indicate in the notes the 52 in 52 project.

Fall
Fall is one of my top 4 favorite seasons! I love fall. I love canning, camping, gathering with family, and getting ready for Christmas. I still have to get the garden tilled under and harvest the last tomatoes before a hard frost tonight. This fall is different…..I am a first time empty nester. I need to fill my time doing family and personal portraits or go stir crazy! There is a limit to how many times I can re-watch Doc Martin!
Autumn is such a beautiful time of year. Cooler temperatures means I can use the fireplace while I watch a soccer game. I am already thinking about our children’s portraits in the dining room. What theme do I want that they will love also? Hmmm. But changing them out for a fresh look would be fun.
For planning purposes you should plan your session to start no later than 6. 5 would be better. I do get up early on Saturdays to take portraits, so if you can muster the fortitude for an 8 am session, let’s do it!

Kendall ChristinFischer: Old Meeting House Sessions
I run a Facebook group for dancers and I met Kendall in that group. She runs Myriad Dance Co. and dances all over the valley. I first photographed her group, Myriad, in a fun and challenging group session using a wash of colors in the set, This time I got Kendall and Arielle Miller and we shot in the ballroom of The Old Meeting House (now scheduled for demolition). This post will feature just Kendall, because each dancer deserves their own posts.
Kendall dances a variety of dance genres, from ballet, to modern, from hoops to silks. I was struck by how conscientious she is in her work ethic and in her preparation for a dance shoot. I love this kind of mental attitude with dancers as it brings out my best and I find myself even more eager to create with them and give them the very best I can in lighting and a working relationship.
This session was taken during Covid and Kendall brought this fancy bejeweled face mask. We had to get a portrait with it. Does she look part Ninja with it on?
There are a number of options for you when planning a dance portrait session. Starting at $100, there are lots of possibilities. You may find more of Kendall on:

I get it….you are nervous and excited at the same time. You are excited about the possibility of amazing images and having a fun time creating them…but you’re nervous about at the “what ifs”. What if I bring the wrong clothes…what if I forget some great accessories…what if my makeup, hair etc, isn’t right, what if….. It’s an exhausting set of “what ifs”.
What if…..there were a great way to eliminate the “what ifs” of your photo session?
I specialize in contemporary fashion portraiture. My goal is to create the best image you have ever seen of yourself. I have a wonderful team to help you through your session. I have a number of resources that will help you come prepared and confident. We start with a consultation/planning session. We can do this in person or on zoom. We discuss your style and what wardrobe you have and what I have that you can use. We will plan your wardrobe from head to toe, from accessories to foundation.
In your consultation we will consider what colors look best on you, discuss makeup and hair options, pick your most flattering clothes, and make sure you have a plan from head to toe for each outfit.
I will send you a check list to help you organize everything. On the day of your session my assistant will help you layout and organize your outfits, and my hair and makeup artists will get to work pampering you and getting you ready. How to Find the Perfect Photo Shoot Location
Choosing a photo shoot location might seem like a big deal but it really doesn't have to be difficult. A location usually drives some of the other decisions you will need to make about your shoot so it’s important to choose the right place. Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide on a location:
1) What kind of theme do I want?
If a particular building or natural backdrop would work well with your theme, look around your area for spots that meet your requirements. If you don't know what kind of backdrop you want, take an afternoon drive around your city for inspiration. It's easy to overlook beautiful spots that are practically in your backyard. Ask family, friends or your photographer for ideas too.
2) Are you allowed to take pictures there?
Make sure that you can legally take pictures at the location that you have in mind. If it's not public property or available to the public you will need to get permission first.
Will the photo session be in a public place?
If the location you have chosen has a lot of foot traffic, you need to ask yourself whether you are comfortable being photographed in front of others. If not, you might want to rethink your choice in location
Make sure that your location doesn’t become a distraction and that there is shelter nearby if you need it. Your location tells a story so it’s worthwhile to choose a meaningful spot.
Of course, along with location portraits, I am always ready for a studio session. More on that for next post.
Katie Fillerup - Dancer
Katie is a young dancer with a lot of spirit. Excited that I get to work with her again soon.
A lot of dancers and dancewear models come to me to build their online content. I am always up for interesting and challenging ideas. I love the creative process…let’s create something together.
Women over 40
Women over 40 have a lot to show for their lives….and they still have much left to do.
Women over 40 are amazing. They have reached a point in life where their talents shine, and the confidence they have in life is so much more solid that when they were in their 20’s.
These women…moms, wives, business owners, executives, etc. all are strong and beautiful. My camera just let’s them see themselves as wonderful as they have become.
These women are living their lives and not merely existing. I have been amazed at the power of their stories and how each of them have taken control and built their destinies.
I will be announcing a 40 over 40 project soon as I look for more accomplished ladies. Stay tuned.
Choosing the Right Props for Your Next Photo Session
Have you ever thought about adding props to your photo sessions? Props can add interest, depth and an extra flair to your pictures. Get your children to hold coordinating flowers for a spring or summer shoot. Love sports? Then use baseball bats in your next family photo to bring out your passion. Here are a few tips for ways to incorporate props in your next photo session.
Avoid trends. While you might have recently seen a few photos that incorporate a specific prop, try not to use something that will not look really dated in 20 years’ time. Classic is definitely better and there are many fun options to choose from.
Size matters. There are some larger props that work really well in photo sessions such as using your grandpa's farm tractor as a background piece. However, there are some larger props that can take away from the beauty of the photograph altogether. Make sure that your prop enhances the photo and doesn't detract from it.
Remember, using props can be the perfect addition to your photos but make sure that they don’t become the main focus.

Your Headshot Tells a Story
Meet Tom Sparks, a remarkable headshot photographer whose mastery of the craft transcends the ordinary. With an intuitive understanding of light, composition, and the art of capturing genuine expressions, Tom elevates headshot photography to an immersive experience. Clients commend Alex not only for technical prowess but also for the ability to create a comfortable and authentic environment during photo sessions. Each shot reflects a meticulous attention to detail, showcasing the unique personality of the subject
Yes…Your headshot tells the story of the potential you offer your client. We all try to cultivate a message our ideal prospects will respond to. Your headshot is the beginning of that message. What is your client going to experience? Competence? Creativity? Trustworthiness? Attention to details? or something else. How are you going to fascinate them?
I find that you can communicate a couple of values with your headshot. It is often the first chance a client has to be visually connected to you. Before your headshot session you need to be asking yourself what your strengths are and how you want to message those strengths. Are your clients looking for technical perfection and personality is second to that? Or are your ideal clients looking for a caring, compassionate person they can relate to and if they relate then they will trust you?
How I Help People. Use my experience creating headshots to your advantage. I want to help you connect with your tribe. Part of my process is a pre-shoot consultation to best determine the message, the mood, and the over all look. We’ll discuss your ideal client and the kind of image that will help attract them. We will plan wardrobe and location or types of backgrounds and settings.
I know some people are fearful of being photographed because of any number of things. They think they look to fat, or to old, or to young, or they think they just don’t look good on camera. I say….get over it. It is my job to create the best photo you have ever seen of yourself. That is my superpower. Let’s focus on your superpower so your clients will see that.
There are a couple types of service that I provide. A traditional business headshot, a makeover headshot, and personal branding which goes beyond just a headshot.
Call, text, or email for a free no pressure consultation. I prefer happy customers so I like to figure out if we are a good fit and I can truly help you. Feel free to pick my brain.

Top 5 Tips for Making a Photo Session with Kids Easier
If you’re preparing for a photo session with your children, you may be feeling a bit apprehensive. Children aren’t always easy to deal with, which is why the below tips will definitely come in handy before your upcoming photo session.
1. Don't make a huge deal out of it. If you're stressed out and cranky, your kids will usually pick up on it and act accordingly. Their behavior will usually be better if you are relaxed and having fun. You may have to make some compromises to keep the peace such as letting your energetic daughter's hair stay straight instead of curling it into because she won't sit still. Focus on the big picture and don't sweat the small stuff.
2. Make it fun. Let the kids have a couple “fun pictures” where they get to pick their own pose or props. You get to keep the more serious photos while they get to keep their silly photos. This way everyone wins. If you are struggling to get your kids to sit still, turn the photo session into a game. Simon Says usually works like a charm.
3. Be prepared. If you're going to be out for several hours, ensure that your children are well rested and have had their nap. Bringing some snacks and activities along is also a great idea. If you are having your own photos taken too then you might want to bring a babysitter or family member along to watch the kids. If you happen to be shooting in a remote location, you never know when you might need something like bug spray, tissues or a first aid kit so bring that along too.
4. Be patient. Save your sanity by trying not to control the photo session too much. Sometimes the best photos come from kids just doing their own thing. Work with your photographer and your photos will look fantastic.
5. Have a chat. Get your children talking to both you and the photographer about topics such as school or their favorite songs. This allows them to feel more comfortable around your photographer and will also give your photographer a chance to capture a few candid and cute expressions.
Meet Aurora
Aurora is an excellent dancer and perfect coach for dance portraits.
I am not a dancer. Never was and never will be. I study dance technique as a photographer and I learn all I can, but I felt that I could serve my clients better if I hired a dancer and so I began a search. I have a board of select dance moms advising me also. And one of my dance moms pointed me to Aurora.
It is fun to watch Aurora work with these younger dancers, and to see the dancers respond and their dance poses look instantly better.
When I work with dancers I try to invite them to create and use their imagination or preferences with dance moves or poses. I always bring ideas to shoots and encourage dancers to do the same. I am a sucker for the dramatic and contrast is one of the dramatic tools I try to play up. I love the contrast between the reds and her dress, with the mural having a little orange and yellow to tie it all together.
I am looking forward to what Aurora can contribute to my dancers portfolio. I can’t wait for audition season. Please, come see how we can build your dance portfolio.
I invite you to a free consultation to see if we can help you get the images you desire. My consultations are a joyful, low pressure exploration of your goals to see if we are a creative match and If I am the right photographer for you. There is no pressure because I only want clients who will find joy in working with me and who already love my work. If you would like more information….use the short for below and I’ll be in touch.
@chloe_haddie, Dance Sisters
Two young dancers and their photo shoot at the Conservation Garden Park.
@chloe_haddie is their Instagram handle. Chloe and the left, Haddie on the right. These cute dancing sisters had a fun outdoor dance photo shoot at The Conservation Garden Park. Their schedule kind of had us stuck photographing in mid-day sun.
Here are a few of Chloe showing her skills:
My assistant is also my dance coach. Aurora is in her last year working on a dance degree and is amazing with dancers. During our time, we worked with the girls to find and create poses that showed their best form and skill. The girls had fun creating this set of images.
Here are a few of Haddie:
@chloe_haddie (look them up on IG) mom and dad both came along to help out. They surprised me by bringing a skateboard! Check out Haddie with a tutu on a skateboard!
Chloe….the big sister had some mad skills!
Let’s finish with Haddie on her head!
Let me know what kind of images you want.
